ERIMUS: LIFE SKILLS ON THE MENU

YOUNG people scaled the heights in celebration as they completed an innovative course run by Middlesbrough’s largest landlord.

Teenagers who recently completed Erimus Housing’s ‘Learn and Let Live’ scheme took part in the ‘Give Life a Lift’ course as they received their certificates.

The young people climbed crates and abseiled down the tower at Coulby Newham Fire Station in a fun day after spending 12 weeks learning about life skills with Erimus Housing.

Erimus is working in partnership with Safe in Tees Valley to show teenagers in the town a better way of life by teaching them how to sustain a tenancy through the ‘Learn and Let Live’ course.

By picking up screwdrivers or calculators, the young people are being taught more about how to live life on their own in the sessions.

Erimus Housing, part of Fabrick Housing Group, could even eventually offer tenancies to teenagers who have successfully undergone the course.

Laura Kulgan, 18, was one of the teenagers to undergo the course. She said: “It was good fun and we learnt a lot, like first aid and safety at home. It will help in the future.”

The course, aimed at 16 to 19-year-olds, aims to work with up to ten young people at any one time.

Lasting 12 weeks, the sessions teach the teenagers a range of skills, including healthy eating, budgeting and DIY.

Everyone successfully taking part ends the course with four qualifications at level 1 and a Youth Achievement Award.

The course is facilitated by a designated worker from Safe in Tees Valley who is accepting referrals from Erimus Housing tenants or young people on the choice based lettings scheme.

Young people waiting for properties and current tenants who are having problems with their tenancies such as anti-social behaviour and rent arrears are being targeted.

People identified as having further needs will be assigned a key worker to work with them for up to 12 months following the course to help them gain and sustain a tenancy.

Mike Carr, Chair of the Board for Erimus Housing, said: “Learn and Let Live equips these young people with the skills they need to live life on their own, and helps us sustain quality neighbourhoods.

“We would like to congratulate them for successfully completing the course and hope they can put what they have learnt into good practice, making some good friends along the way.”
